Collaboration of Local Government and Tribal Government
The City of Shasta Lake would like to congratulate the Wintu Tribe of Northern CA / Toyon Wintu Center on this remarkable achievement. This project became a vision back in 2007, when City Staff and Tribal Leaders met to discuss applying for a grant to construct the Wintu Cultural Resources Center. The vision was to have a community multipurpose room to hold community and tribal events, program offices, and a museum to tell the story of the Wintu people. Late in 2007, The City submitted a State of California Department of Housing and Community Development Native American CDBG Grant application on behalf of the Wintu Tribe of Northern CA in the amount of $1,000,000 to construct a Cultural Resource Center. This vision became a reality, when the project received funding in the 2007 grant cycle, and again the 2010 cycle. The project received a total of $1.8 million in State of CA CDBG Grant funds, and $155,000 City of Shasta Lake Redevelopment Funds.
The City Council of Shasta Lake recognizes the significance of the collaboration between local government and tribal government – a partnership that resulted in this outstanding project that will be a draw for visitors to our City, and a tribute to all the Wintu and neighboring Native American Tribes.
